Is that a peach?  I am reminded of the garbage lady in the Labyrinth. Also, a short story by Michael Ende. A man with wings walks out of an accursed city, and all the people run to him with their hopes and tack things onto his wings in the hope he'll fly away with them. Out of compassion he allows this. When he gets to the end of the city, he realizes he cannot fly...
